In short: we do not ask you to create an account, we use no analytics and set no tracking cookies, and we do not sell your personal information. A VIN you look up is a vehicle identifier, not a name.
1. Information we collect
- VINs you look up. To decode a VIN we send it to the NHTSA vPIC service and keep the response in a cache on our server so repeat lookups are faster. The cache stores vehicle data, not information about who searched.
- Messages you send us. If you use the contact form, we receive your name, email address and message, and use them only to reply.
- Technical data. Like most websites, our server and hosting provider log standard request data such as IP address, browser type, pages requested and timestamps, for security and troubleshooting.
We do not collect payment details. Purchases of history reports happen on the provider's own site.
2. How we use it
We use this information to run the Site, decode the VINs you enter, answer your messages, keep the Site secure and prevent abuse, and meet legal obligations.
3. Cookies, analytics and tracking
We do not use analytics or tracking tools. The Site does not use Google Analytics or any similar service, does not set advertising or analytics cookies, and does not use tracking pixels or session-recording tools. Because of that, there is no cookie banner to accept and nothing to opt out of.
Your browser's session storage temporarily holds a decode result so the results page can load without repeating the lookup; it is cleared when you close the tab. The Site loads fonts from Google Fonts, which means Google receives your IP address and browser details when a page loads. If we add analytics in the future, we will update this page.
4. Sharing
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We share data only with:
- NHTSA, which receives the VIN you ask us to decode;
- service providers that host the Site and deliver email for us;
- authorities, when required by law or to protect rights and safety.
5. Third-party sites
When you click through to a history report provider or any other outside site, that site collects information under its own privacy policy. Our commission tracking relies on the link you click; please read the provider's policy before you buy.
6. Retention and security
Cached VIN data is kept for as long as it is useful to serve the Site. Contact messages are kept as long as needed to handle your request. We use reasonable safeguards, but no transmission over the Internet or storage system is 100% secure.
7. Your rights
Depending on where you live, including residents of Connecticut and other states with consumer privacy laws, you may have the right to know what personal information we hold, and to ask us to access, correct or delete it. We do not sell personal information, use it for targeted advertising or profile you. To make a request, email support@vincheckct.com. We may need to confirm it is you before acting on it.
8. Children
The Site is meant for adults researching a vehicle purchase. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has sent us information, tell us and we will delete it.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows the latest version.
